Robert Lee Buchanan, Sr.

AIKEN – Mr. Robert Lee Buchanan, Sr., 86, died Friday, September 5, 2008 at his residence. Funeral services will be held at 2:30 PM Tuesday at First Baptist Church, Aiken. Reverend Cathy Cole and Reverend Furman Buchanan will officiate. A private interment will be held prior to the service in Historic Bethany Cemetery. The family will receive friends following the service in the church parlor. Honorary pallbearers will be members of the Ed Cushman Sunday School Class. Mr. Buchanan was born in Coronaca, SC, a son of the late Robert Pinckney and Carrie Lee Pinson Buchanan. He attended Clemson College where he participated in numerous activities, including Blue Key, Scabbard and Blade and Tiger Brotherhood. He graduated with honors in 1943, receiving a B.S. in Electrical Engineering. He served in WWII as a Captain in the U.S. Army in the Pacific Theatre. He moved to Aiken in 1950 and established Buchanan Home and Auto Supply, Inc. While in Aiken, he was a member of the Lions Club, past president of the Aiken Chamber of Commerce, past Chairman of the Aiken County Hospital Board, past member of the Aiken County School Board, a member of the Aiken Merchants Association, and an active member of First Baptist Church where he served as a Deacon. Survivors include his beloved wife, Ruth Nicholson Buchanan; a daughter, Patricia Buchanan (Dr. James) Darling, Atlanta, GA; two sons, The Honorable Robert L. (Tookie) Buchanan, Jr., Barry N. (Brenda) Buchanan, both of Aiken; eight grandchildren, Dr. Robert Lee Buchanan, III, William Tarrant Buchanan, Mary Bailey Buchanan, Franklin Nicholson (Kendall) Buchanan, Anne Wesberry Buchanan, Abigail Lee Darling, Madison Caroline Darling and Ashley Taylor Darling.
