AIKEN, SC- Mrs. Rhea M. Horner, 95, of Carnoustie Court, Aiken, died August, 21 ,2014, at home,following a brief illness. She was born May 20, 1919, in Kankakee, IL. She was predeceased by her mother Luella H Carville, her father, Frank Carville, and her sister, Virginia C Martin.
In 1939 she graduated from the West Jersey Hospital, School of Nursing in Camden, NJ and worked for many years as a Registered Nurse. She married the late Dr.John Ira Horner in 1943 who predeceased her in January of 1956. She made Aiken her home for the past 30 years.
Mrs. Horner is survived by her two children, Ms. Nancy H Sjostrom of Aiken and Dr. Richard J Horner of Northboro, MA. ; four grandchildren, Lee Sjostrom,(Erin), Atlanta, GA, Matt Sjostrom, Mt. Pleasant, SC, Christy Gordon,(Ken) Glastonbury, CT, and Brian (Erin)Horner, Old Hickory, TN ; and seven great grandchildren, Maggie Sjostrom, Will Sjostrom, Wade Sjostrom, Hugh Sjostrom, Julia Gordon, Kenny Gordon and Anna Kate Horner. She is also survived by a niece, Julie Sawyer and two nephews Kenneth Martin and Thomas Martin.
Rhea was known for her love of her family, animals, her profession and gardening. In spite of failing health in the past year, she continued to enjoy walking at the mall almost daily where she made many new friends. Rhea and her family were grateful for the exceptional care and compassion of Dr. Lee Merchen, her physician at GRU, for the past six years; for the special care and kindness of B.J. Baker and Monya Foster, two of her caregivers from Right At Home, who made her days easier during the year; and for the care of Juan Cruz, RN and Tracy Stichert, RN of Trinity Hospice who provided comfort and care to Rhea during her final days.
In lieu of flowers, memorial contributions may be sent to The Aiken County SPCA, Trinity Hospice, Salvation Army or The American Red Cross.
Her family will have a private celebration of her life at a later date.
