John Edward Empie

AIKEN - Mr. John E Empie, 87, loving husband of Maureen Walter Empie, passed away, Monday, October 13, 2014. A memorial service with military honors will be held 2:00 PM Saturday, November 1, 2014 at South Aiken Presbyterian Church with the Rev. Dr. Christopher Crotwell officiating. The Aiken Senior Men's Club will serve as honorary pallbearers. The family will receive friends following the service at the church. Mr. Empie was born in Grafton, ND to the late Harold and Winifred Sargent Empie. He served in the US Navy and worked professionally as an industrial designer. After moving to Aiken in 2005, Mr. Empie became a member of South Aiken Presbyterian Church. He was also a member of Aiken Senior Men's Club, Fellowship of Christian Athletics and was the 2008 Man of the Year for the Aiken Senior Men's Club. He received awards in design, cartoon and golfing. John invented and patented an ice cream scoop and a training device for golfers. He produced 8mm training videos for downhill skiing, tennis and golf. John was an avid cartoonist and loved making sterling silver jewelry. Travels around the world took John and his wife to Europe, Africa and later to India where he made a movie of a technical school supported by the Methodist Churches and to be viewed by the Methodist Churches in United States. In addition to his wife, Mr. Empie is survived by his sister, Marion Lewton, Marion, IN., several nieces, nephews, grand nieces, grand nephews and a sister-in-law; Sandy Houg, Minnetonka, Mn.
