Barbara Sipp Sampson

Barbara Sipp Sampson, 91, wife of Ed Sampson of Aiken, entered into rest on Tuesday evening, October 28th, 2014 at her residence after a valiant battle with cancer and in the loving arms of Christ and surrounded by her family. Mrs. Sampson was born in Topeka, Kansas on February 23, 1923, the daughter of Fred and Marian Sipp. She graduated from Rocky River High School in Cleveland, Ohio and attended the University of Miami, in Ohio. She worked at Batelle Memorial Institute in Columbus, Ohio, in the business office. She then headed west to work with Hydril, an oil-field drilling company in it’s business office. Here, she met her future husband, Ed Sampson, and they were married on August 17, 1946. After short stints in Niagra Falls, New York, and Oak Ridge, Tennessee, Bobbie and Ed moved to Aiken in 1952 as Ed was transferred by DuPont to work at the Savannah River Plant. Bobbie was a loving wife to Ed for 68 years, a mother of 3, grandmother of 12 and great grandmother of 9. Mrs. Sampson was active in many local organizations. She served faithfully as a “Pink Lady” at the Aiken County Hospital beginning in 1976 and continued her service until a few months ago. She thoroughly enjoyed her involvement with the PEO sisterhood, serving a term as president. A lover of all kinds of flowers, Mrs. Sampson was a member of the Country Gardeners garden club where she served as its president twice. She also participated in the Pan Hellenic Council. Additionally, as a long-time member of the St. Thaddeus Episcopal Church, she served as the president of the Episcopal Church Women. As her daughters grew up, she willingly became a Brownie and Girl Scout leader and served on the Girl Scout board. Bobbie enjoyed everything to do with her family. She delighted in attending any event having to do with her children, grandchildren, or great grandchildren. Although not a loud fan, we all knew she was in attendance. She was an avid bridge player and loved the social time she spent playing the game with her many friends. The only regret she had was that she seemed to “never have good cards.” Her legacy is one of a positive mental attitude, a strong faith, a definitive moral compass, and a happy, gentle love for her family and friends. Survivors include daughters Kathy (Frank Wise) of Aiken and Mary (Doug Clementson) of Virginia, and son Pete Sampson (Lynn) of Aiken; brother Don Sipp (Mary Jo) of California and sister-in-law Barb (Jim Sipp) of Ohio; grandchildren Betsy Dick, Laura Saunders, Scott Sampson, Alan Sampson, Josh Clementson, Rebekah Holt, Chris Clementson, Ruth Been, Daniel Clementson, Luke Clementson, Sarah Ferry and Anna Clarke; and great grandchildren Micah, Nathan, Chloe, Jane, Ashley, Emily, Satch, Caroline and Patrick. Mrs. Sampson was preceded in death by her brother Jim Sipp of Ohio. Funeral Services will be at 1:00 PM on Friday, October 31, 2014, at St. Thaddeus Episcopal Church with Father Grant Wiseman officiating. Interment will be in the St. Thaddeus cemetery following the service. The family will receive friends from 5:00 – 7:00, Thursday evening at Shellhouse Funeral Home, 924 Hayne Avenue, Aiken, SC.
