Dorothy Orsag

April 8, 1925 — November 17, 2014

AIKEN – Mrs. Dorothy Jacobs Orsag passed away on November 17, 2014. Services will be held privately by the family. Dorothy was born in Maxwell, Pennsylvania on April 8, 1925. She was the fifth of ten children born to Joseph S. Jacobs and Caroline Bakos both of Hungarian descent. During World War II, Dorothy worked in Washington, DC where she met her life-long friend Olga Cotton. They remained friends and enjoyed traveling to exotic locales. During later years of the war she worked in New York City with her sister, Mary. In 1955 she moved to Aiken, SC with her husband and three daughters, which is where she remained. She enjoyed traveling both in the states and abroad. Her postcards from various locales led to her family’s nickname, “G.Ma.” because it was easier to sign in the small space than “Grandma.” This further led to her being called “G.G.Ma” by her great grandchildren. Through the years she acquired other nicknames including “Tootsie,” given to her by her siblings, and “Dot” or “Dottie” which was memorialized by a newspaper clipping hanging in her kitchen from Hurricane Dottie in 1976 which read “Dottie Loses Zip,” though, she always seemed to keep it together. Dorothy also enjoyed playing cards, mahjong, bingo and dominoes with friends and family as well as watching movies and dramatic television shows while indulging in dark chocolates. She reveled in finding a good bargain, teaching her family that the best things in life are at least half price. She was a member of the Red Hat Society and W.O.W. Dorothy is survived by three of her siblings, Betty Behary, Ed Jacobs, and Shirley Dowling, her three daughters, Elaine Schall, Michele Van Nieuwenhuise, and Carolyn Wells, six grandchildren, Amy, Peter, Seth, Sabena, Sarah, and Rachel, and five great-grandchildren, Joshua, Lydia, Naomi, Eli, and Olympia. Memorial contributions may be directed to ACTS, 340 Park Ave SW, Aiken, SC 29801.
