AIKEN, SC – JAMES FREDERICK SIDES, 73, beloved husband of Karen Duncan Sides for 44 years, died Saturday, December 6th, 2014 at his residence.
A native of Birmingham, AL, Fred was a son of the late Charles Eugene and Eunice Leonard Sides. He lived in Aiken the last 54 years and was a retired supervisor with Westinghouse at the Savannah River Site. Fred was a member of the Aiken Jaycees, serving as President in 1969-70. He was named Outstanding Local President for the South Carolina Jaycees in 1970 He was formerly very active in youth sports in Aiken with Dixie Youth Baseball, served as President of Pony League Baseball, and was a member of the Little League Umpire Association. Fred was a member of Millbrook Baptist Church, the Millbrook Whittlers, a former RA’s leader and was active with the youth at The Rock. He was active in beauty pageants in Aiken, and was Vice President of the Miss Aiken County Pageant from 1965 until 1988, then was Vice President of Aiken’s Junior Miss Pageant from 1965 until 1985. He founded the Miss South Aiken Pageant in 1980 and remained active until 1997. He was also involved with the Miss South Carolina Pageant. Fred was videographer for South Aiken High School Football and Basketball games for a number of years, and was proud to have the Fred Sides Most Improved Football Player Award at South Aiken High named in his honor.
Survivors, in addition to his wife Karen, include two sons, David Scott (Jennifer) Sides, Myrtle Beach, SC, Brian Kenneth (Shannon) Sides, Carrolton, GA; four grandchildren, Ashleigh Sides, Madison Sides, Anna Claire Sides, Cody Gay; two sisters, Nancy West, Aiken, Linda (Clifford) Saucier, Birmingham, AL. In addition to his parents, Fred was preceded in death by an infant sister, Martha Sue Sides and three brothers, Bo Sides, Jerry Sides and Charles Sides.
The family will receive friends Monday evening from 6 until 8 o’clock at Shellhouse – Rivers Funeral Home.
Funeral services will be held Tuesday afternoon at 1 o’clock at Millbrook Baptist Church with The Reverends Dr. Phillip Dunn, Dr. Chris Masters and Mike Chandler officiating. Interment will follow in Aiken Memorial Gardens. Pallbearers will be Houston Brown, Harry Harmon, Jim Dawsey, Cricket Grant, Mike Fox and Clyde Harkins. Honorary Pallbearers will be the Millbrook Whittlers.
