AIKEN, SC - Barbara Bentley Kemp died on Monday, January 19, 2015 at Pepper Hill Nursing Center.
Born July 25, 1927 in Lowell, Massachusetts, Ms. Kemp was a daughter of the late Thomas and Rita Bentley. She moved to Aiken in 1968 and was a member of the First Presbyterian Church. She graduated with a BA from Barnard College and later earned a Master’s Degree in Social Work from the University of Georgia, and worked for many years at the Aiken County Health Department, both as a Social Worker and then as the Social Work Supervisor.
Ms. Kemp spent her time raising her beloved Border Terriers. She brought her first dogs from England. They traveled to dog shows and won many awards including Best of Show. She had a great love for her dogs and worked Border Terrier rescue after her retirement.
Ms. Kemp was preceded in death by her parents and a sister Rosemary.
Survivors include her sister Rita Bentley Rice and brother Thomas G. Bentley of Massachusetts, three daughters: Edith Kemp Richmond of Marietta, GA, Marjorie Kemp McGreggor of Daly City CA, and Sally Kemp Reid of Nashville, TN. Also surviving are seven grandchildren and one great grandson.
A memorial service will be held at 2:00 PM on Sunday, February 1, 2015 at the Shellhouse-Rivers Funeral Home chapel. Rev. Martha M. Ebel will be officiating.
