AIKEN, SC – MARY GENE CARROLL, 87, widow of William Reynolds Carroll II, died Friday, November 28, 2008 at Mattie C. Hall Health Care Center.
A native of Kingstree, SC, Mrs. Carroll was a daughter of the late Alexander McKnight and Ruth Meadors Gordon. Gene was a graduate of Columbia College and received her Master's in Counseling from the University of South Carolina. She was a retired teacher with the Aiken County Schools. She taught music at Millbrook Elementary for 16 years and also taught English at L-B-C High School and Aiken Jr. High School. She was a member of St. John’s United Methodist Church where she was a member of the Fellowship Sunday School Class. She was also a member of the D.A.R. and a docent at the Aiken County Museum and volunteer for ACTS.
Survivors include her daughter, Nancy Carroll (Johnny) Tate, Aiken, a son, William “Bill” (Frances) Carroll, Dunwoody, GA, five grandchildren, Elizabeth Carroll, Rivers Carroll, Elizabeth Coggins, Vernon Geckler and Charlene Lenker, twelve great-grandchildren, a sister, Ruth Alexander (Gordon) Steffen, Kingsport, TN and a brother, William Meadors Gordon, Kingstree, SC.
A memorial service will be held Tuesday at 3:00 PM at St. John’s United Methodist Church with The Rev. Dr. George K. Howle officiating. Interment will take place prior to the memorial service in Sunset Memory Gardens. The family will receive friends following the memorial service at the church.
