February 17, 1926 — March 22, 2015

AIKEN – Mr. Cecil Hood Owens, 89, passed away Sunday, March 22, 2015 at his residence. A Celebration of Life will be held at 3:00 PM Tuesday at Talatha Baptist Church with the Revs. David Little, Mike Phillips and Dr. Raymond Crow officiating. Interment will follow in the church cemetery. Pallbearers will be David Owens, Wallace Owens, James Owens, Stanley Porter, Gary Miller and Gary Galloway. Honorary pallbearers will be Raymond Hutto, Jesse Moyer, Roger Green, Landon Seigler and Freddie Heath. Mr. Owens, a son of the late Jesse H. and Carrie Sizemore Owens, was a lifelong resident of Aiken. He served in the US Army and worked for the Graniteville Co. for over 40 years. He was a member of Talatha Baptist Church where he served as a deacon for over 50 years, taught Sunday School and was a choir member. Mr. Owens was a loving father and grandfather who loved to garden and farm, often giving his vegetables to his friends. He also volunteered with Meals on Wheels. He celebrated life each and every day. Mr. Owens is survived by his two daughters, Beverly (Vernon) Peeples, Aiken, Wanda (Jerry) Webb, Aiken; three grandchildren, Matthew (Melissa) Peeples, Carmen Webb and Jeremy (Lucy) Webb; sisters, Carrie (Jesse) Moyer, Ruth Joye, Diane Owens Turner; brother, James (Harriett) Owens; nieces , nephews and friends of all ages. In addition to his parents, Mr. Owens was preceded in death by his beloved wife, Johnnie Mae Collins Owens; sisters, Eloise Ponton, Helen Shoemake; brothers, Wilbur Owens, Willie Owens and Butler Pettis. In lieu of flowers, memorials may be directed to the Talatha Baptist Church Building Fund, 361 Talatha Church Rd., Aiken, SC 29803. The family will receive friends from 6-8 PM Monday evening at SHELLHOUSE-RIVERS FUNERAL HOME, INC., 715 E. PINE LOG RD., AIKEN, SC.
