AIKEN, SC – HARRY HASTINGS WOODWARD, JR., 82, died peacefully Sunday, April 26, 2015 at Anchor Health and Rehab of Aiken, SC.
Harry was a native son of Aiken. He was the son of Harry Hastings Woodward, Sr. and Almena Preacher Woodward. He was a veteran of the United States Navy and served during the Korean War aboard the USS Intrepid. He received his bachelor’s degree from the University of South Carolina and his master’s degree from the School of Social Service Administration at the University of Chicago. Harry devoted his life to public service and served as executive director for numerous organizations in both South Carolina and Chicago, IL. Harry loved to read, especially about the Civil War, and to travel throughout the world.
Harry is survived by his son Zigmas Hastings Woodward and daughter-in-law Christina Woodward, 3 grandchildren, Scarlett, Bishop, and Harlow of Los Angeles, CA; his sister, Frances Woodward Coons and her husband Johnny Coons, nephew John Coons and niece Christy Posey of Aiken, SC; and his former wife Violeta Woodward of Chicago, IL.
The family will receive friends on Thursday, April 30, 2015 from 6-8 PM at Shellhouse – Rivers Funeral Home.
Funeral services will be held on Friday, May 01, 2015 at 11 AM at Shellhouse – Rivers Funeral Home Chapel with the Reverend Dr. Chris Masters officiating. Interment will follow in the Scott Family Cemetery with military honors.
In lieu of flowers, the family requests that contributions be made in Harry’s memory to the Almena Preacher Woodward Scholarship in Nursing. Checks can be made payable to the Aiken Partnership, USC Aiken, 471 University Parkway, Aiken, SC 29801.
