Mount Pleasant, SC - Kenneth Norwood Owens, M.D., 91 passed away Tuesday, June 16, 2015 in Charleston, SC.
A private family burial will be at 10 am on Saturday, June 20th at Bethany Cemetery in Aiken SC, the Reverend Doctor Tim McClendon and the Reverend Nancy Reed will officiate. The memorial service will follow at 11 am at Shellhouse Funeral Home, 924 Hayne Ave SW in Aiken; followed by a reception from 12:00 – 2:00 PM at the Kalmia Landing Clubhouse off of Gregg Avenue at 205 Landing Dr., in Aiken.
Dr. Owens was born in Denver Colorado, the son of the late Marvin Stewart and Mildred McClanahan Owens. He served in the Korean War with the United States Army and moved to Aiken in 1959. Dr. Owens practiced Obstetrics and Gynecology in Aiken for 26 years. He was a member of the South Carolina Medical Society and held many offices including serving as President in 1984. He was a member of the American Medical Association and American College of Obstetrics and Gynecology as well. He was on the Kalmia Landing Board of Directors, a member of the Saint Andrews Society of Aiken and was on the Board of Trustees for St. John's United Methodist Church.
He is survived by his loving wife, Joan Baxter Owens and two sons, Stuart Cameron Owens (Louise) of Mount Pleasant, SC, and Bruce Baxter Owens (Cindy) of Anchorage, Alaska; grandchildren, Kenneth Baxter Owens, Cameron Alston Owens, James Baxter Owens, Joel Douglas Rader (Cindy), Terry Cameron Owens and Samantha Margaret Owens; and a great grandchild, Maya, daughter of Joel and Cindy.
In addition to his parents, Dr. Owens was preceded in death by a son Bryan Tompkins Owens.
After his retirement he and Mrs. Owens spent 13 years traveling the world. He was an avid reader, war historian, and gardener.
