Gene Smith

AIKEN, SC – Gene Smith, 62, husband of the late Judy McDaniel Smith died February 1, 2009 from injuries sustained in an automobile collision. Born in Monticello, MS Mr. Smith was a son of Roberta Mullins Smith and the late J.P. Smith He was a Navy Veteran, and served two tours in Vietnam. He was a member of the Augusta Masonic Lodge, VFW Post 649 in Augusta and Local 198. Gene was an Engineer with SRS Nuclear Solutions and worked in Start Up Testing. Survivors in addition to his mother Roberta, of Clinton, LA, include his loving children, Redina Nettles, Aiken, Robbin (Ann Lober) Nettles, Covington, IN. Other survivors include grandchildren, Holly(Kerry) Foreman, Jackson, SC, Heather (Mack) Whittle, Aiken, Randall Nettles, Sigorney, IA, and Derrin Nettles, Philadelphia, MS, great grandchildren, Mackenzie and Madison Whittle, Gage Bowers, Keylee and Bryce Foreman, and Daelin Nettles, two sisters, Terri (Warren) Wilson, Baton Rouge, LA and Debbie (Phil) Green, Clinton, LA and special friends, Ron Janssen and Jack Dalton. He was preceded in death by his father and his son Randy Nettles. Memorials may be directed to VFW Post 649 in Augusta, GA. Funeral services will be held at 3:00 PM Friday at Shellhouse-Rivers Funeral Home with the Rev. Philip Lee officiating. Interment will follow at Aiken Memorial Cemetery. Pallbearers will be Ron Janssen, Mack Whittle III, Kerry Foreman, Warren Wilson, Mike Avery and Jack Dalton. Honorary Pallbearers will be Hurlick Pagan, Glenn Blume, Billy Davis, John Hicks, Phil Green and David Parker. The family will receive friends from 6PM to 8 PM Thursday at Shellhouse-Rivers Funeral Home, 715 East Pine Log Rd, Aiken, SC.
