Carrie W. Smalley

AIKEN, SC – CARRIE W. SMALLEY, 91, beloved wife of John D. Smalley, died Thursday, August 20, 2015 at her residence. A native of Edgefield, SC, Mrs. Smalley was a daughter of the late Julian Talbert and Rebecca Whatley Wash.  She lived in Aiken since 1965 and was a homemaker.  Her faith and family were very important to her as she was active in her children’s and grandchildren’s lives, including serving on the PTA and being a room mother at Millbrook Elementary School.  Carrie was a member of Talatha Baptist Church.   She enjoyed gardening, was an excellent cook and loved to bake. Survivors, in addition to her husband, John, include two daughters, Cindy Abshire (Robert) and Debra Bookstaver (Paul), both of Aiken; two sons, Wayne Smalley (Tom Treat), Chicago, IL and Danny Smalley (Sheila), Aiken, seven grandchildren, Robert Abshire III, Lizzie Abshire, Brandon Bookstaver (Nicole), Becky Bookstaver, Matthew Smalley (Brandy), Stephen Smalley (Adri), Megan Gmerek, (David, Jr.); three great-grandchildren, Preston Smalley, Lilly Smalley and Kyle Smalley; two sisters, Frances Jones, Rock Hill, SC, Helen Douglas (William), Greenwood, SC; two brothers, Harold Wash (Jo), Greenwood, SC and William Wash (Mary), Edgefield, SC.  In addition to her parents, Carrie was preceded in death by a brother, Julian Talbert Wash, Jr. The family will receive friends Monday morning beginning at 10 o’clock at Shellhouse - Rivers Funeral Home followed by the funeral service at 11 o’clock.  Interment will follow in Sunset Memory Gardens.  Pallbearers will be Robert Abshire III, Brandon Bookstaver, Matthew Smalley, Stephen Smalley, David Gmerek, Jr. and Danny Stevenson.
