Frederick Geissler Ashhurst

AIKEN - Mr. Frederick Geissler Ashhurst, 99, loving husband of Margaret Feher Ashhurst, passed away Thursday, September 3, 2015. A reception in memory of Mr. Ashhurst will be held 3:00 PM Saturday, December 19, 2015 at Kalmia Landing Clubhouse, 205 Landing Dr., Aiken, SC 29801. He was born in Aiken to the late John William and Sophie Geissler Ashhurst. Mr Ashhurst was a member of St. Thaddeus Episcopal Church. He was a graduate of the Aiken Institute, which now houses the public library. He attended the Citadel, class of 1939. He became a member of the New York Seventh Regiment and was deployed to Camp Stewart, GA and subsequently deployed in Europe during WWII fighting from France to Berlin, Germany. After the war he became an assistant tennis professional at Forest Hills, NY. He worked as the tennis pro in Fairfield, CT; Rye, NY and Hollywood, FL. He relocated to the U.S.Virgin Islands and worked as a tennis professional at the V.I. Hilton and then upon its closing, Bluebeard’s Castle Hotel. After moving back to Aiken in 1982, Mr. Ashhurst became a member of the American Legion Post 26 and the Aiken Senior Men’s Club. He was a lifelong member of the US Professional Tennis Association. In addition to his wife, Mr. Ashhurst is survived by his step-daughter, Jane Kilgour, Miami, FL.; son, Kent Clore; granddaughters, Hollie Berry (Lew) and Angela Cecarelli (Tony); two grandchildren, Samantha Hollack (Jeff) and Douglas Kilgour; five great grandchildren and nieces Ann Ritger, Montmorenci, SC and Charlene Parrish, Aiken. He was preceded in death by a sister, Virginia Venning, and two stepbrothers, John Ashhurst and Ravenel Ashhurst. In lieu of flowers, memorials may be directed to St. Thaddeus Episcopal Church or the Aiken Augusta Warrior Project, 4115 Columbia Road, Suite 5-333, Martinez, GA 30907.
