Lois Barnes Banks

February 11, 1917 — September 14, 2015

AIKEN, SC – LOIS BARNES BANKS, 98, widow of Donald G. Banks, went to her eternal home, Monday, September 14, 2015. Born in Kansas City, MO, Lois was a daughter of the late Weldon F. Barnes and Mary Jane Gill Barnes.  She lived most of her life in Pittsburgh, PA until moving to Aiken, SC in 2007.  Lois served as a Red Cross Nurse during World War II.  She graduated from Grace Martin’s School for Secretaries and worked as secretary to the treasurer of Mesta Machine Company.  After raising her family she worked in the Purchasing Department of Shadyside Hospital.  Lois was a faithful member of Northwood U. P. Church and Mt. Lebanon U.P. Church in Pittsburgh where she served many years as a Sunday School teacher.  Lois’ life was exemplified by her selflessness and service to others, her love for her family and dedication to hard work.  She gave many years of service as a volunteer for Columbia Hospital, Penn Hills Service Association, Salvation Army, Girl Scouts of America, Meals on Wheels and St. Clair Hospital. After moving to Aiken, Lois served as secretary of the Aiken Chapter of AARP at the age of 93.  She was a member of South Aiken Presbyterian Church and will be greatly missed by many friends in her Sunday School Class. Surviving are two daughters, Deborah Neuhaus (Gerry), Pittsburgh, PA, Jennifer Summers (Bill), Aiken, SC; four grandchildren, Anne Neuhaus, Ed Neuhaus, Donny Neuhaus, Andrew Summers; a sister, Carole Barnes, Van Nuys, CA.  Lois was preceded in death by her husband of 51 years, Donald; parents; three brothers, Samuel Barnes, Weldon Barnes and William Barnes and her beloved sister, Mary Jane Kirk. A Celebration of Lois’ Life will be Saturday, September 19th at 1 o’clock at South Aiken Presbyterian Church with The Revs. Judy Bowling and Erin Morgan officiating.  The family will receive friends in the church fellowship hall following the service. In lieu of flowers, memorial contributions may be directed to any Meals on Wheels program, Salvation Army or to South Aiken Presbyterian Church.The family would like to express their gratitude to the staff of Harbor Chase for their caring and compassionate care of Lois.
