Gary Douglas Guinn

April 22, 1951 — February 18, 2009

AIKEN, SC – GARY DOUGLAS GUINN, 57, died Wednesday, February 18, 2009 at Aiken Regional Medical Center. Born in Levelland, Texas, Mr. Guinn was a son of Harland Wesley Guinn and the late Dora Grace Lindsey Guinn. He was a Vietnam veteran serving in the U.S. Navy for 10 years active duty and 7 years in the reserves. He achieved Quarter Master Senior Chief and was submarine nuclear qualified. Mr. Guinn was awarded the Navy Achievement Medal. He earned a technical degree in quality assurance, a Bachelor of Science degree in Civil Engineering and completed all of the course work for Masters degrees in Environmental Engineering and Nuclear Engineering (Health Physics). He was a member of the American Health Physicist Society, American Nuclear Society, and the National Register of Environmental Professionals. He was a certified Environmental Manager, and a Safety Trained Supervisor. He was employed with Savannah River Nuclear Solutions at the Savannah River Site doing special projects for the Executive Vice President of Operations.. Immediately prior to joining SRNS, he worked for KeySource as a consultant, most recently supporting the SRNS proposal and transition. Prior to that, He was employed by Washington Group in its Denver Operations Center and for one of its subsidiary companies at Rocky Flats., While in the Denver office, Mr. Guinn had responsibilities in the Project Controls Group, accumulating all the financial reporting in the western United States. At Rocky Flats, Mr. Guinn was the Compliance Manager for the Decontamination and Decommissioning Group and was responsible for many for DOE complex “firsts”, including Building 779, the first plutonium contaminated building decontamination and demolition. Mr. Guinn started at INEEL, where he served as an environmental expert, and radiological engineer. He also coached little league, softball, soccer, and was a leader with the Brownie Scouts, Girl Scouts, Cub Scouts, and was an Explorer Badge Counselor. He was also in a Darts League. Survivors include his loving wife, Linda Ann Jenson Guinn, Aiken, one daughter, Mindy Leigh Guinn and her husband, W. Joe Hardy of Westminster, CO, one son, Aaron J. Guinn of Aiken, his father, Harland Wesley Guinn, Hemet, CA, sister Valary Guinn, Fremont, CA, and one brother, Mark Guinn, Madera, CA. The family will be having an open house this Sunday, February 22, from 2 to 6 pm at the family home in Cedar Creek, 154 Veranda Lane.
