COUCHTON, SC – POPE COOK, 88, beloved husband of Leola Wooten Cook, died Tuesday, September 29, 2015 at Aiken Regional Medical Centers.
Born in Wagener, SC, Pope was a son of the late Lee and Annie Cook. He lived most his life in Aiken County and graduated from Aiken High School. He was a veteran of the United States Army, serving in World War II and Korea. He was a retired mail carrier with the U.S. Postal Service with 30 years of service. After retiring from the Post Office, Pope moved to Moncks Corner and became Chief of the Moncks Corner Fire Department from 1981 until 1989 when he moved back to Couchton. Pope worked as a Bailiff at the Aiken County Court House from 1990 until 2010. He and the late Bill Simmons founded the Couchton Fire Department in 1974 and served as Chief for 8 years. He was a member of Darien Baptist Church and the American Legion.
Survivors, in addition to his wife of 66 years, Leola, include sons, Robert Cook (Blenda), Windsor, SC, William Cook (Madonna), Aiken, Steve Cook (Sharon), Chattanooga, TN, Lewis “Andy” Cook (Sonia), Hephzibah, GA; a daughter, Janice Cook, Aiken; special nephew, Merritt Nimmons, Columbia, SC; grandchildren, LeAnn Terry (Jim), Lugoff, SC, Suzanne Hurt (Eric), Columbia, SC, Caci Nance (William, York, SC, Jonathan Cook (Ashley), Aiken, Brandon Cook (Jenny Curry), Lexington, SC, Steven Cook (Joanne), Columbia, SC, L. Andy Cook (Sunnie), North Augusta, SC, Chris W, Cook, Lexington, SC, Benjamin H. Cook, Chattanooga, TN, James Pope “J.P.” Cook, Hephzibah, GA, Dustin Williams, Hephzibah, GA; eighteen great-grandchildren; a sister, Mary C. Moyer, Aiken and a number of nieces and nephews.
The family will receive friends Friday evening from 6 until 8 o’clock at Shellhouse – Rivers Funeral Home.
Graveside funeral services will be held Saturday morning at 11 o'clock at the Tabernacle Baptist Church Cemetery in Kitchings Mill with The Rev. Jason Redd officiating.
