AIKEN – Mr. Robert F. “Bob” Overman, 91, died at home in Aiken on October 14, 2015.
A funeral service will be held at 2:00 PM Saturday, October 17 at First Baptist Church with the Reverend Cathy Cole officiating. The family will receive friends following the service in the church parlor. A private interment with military honors will be held in Aiken Memorial Gardens.
Born December 11, 1923 in Beverly, MA, he was a son of the late Rev. and Mrs. C.V. Overman. He was preceded in death by three brothers and a sister. He is survived by his wife of 69 years, Bernice Spillers Overman; three children, Susan McGann, Fayetteville, NC, Nancy (David) McNiel, Houston, TX, Glen (Vaughan) Overman, Greer, SC; six grandchildren; five great grandchildren.
Mr. Overman served in the U.S. Army in World War II in General Douglas MacArthur’s headquarters in the Pacific theater. He moved to Aiken in 1952 and retired from E.I. DuPont at the Savannah River Plant. For many years he refereed high school football and basketball. After retirement he volunteered with Habitat for Humanity for more than 25 years and, with his wife, served with the Volunteer Income Tax Assistance (VITA)program. He and his wife were lay volunteers with Wycliffe Bible Translators and the Southern Baptist Convention in countries around the world, He was a member of the American Nuclear Society and the American Chemical Society and was a Life Deacon and Sunday School teacher at First Baptist Church, Aiken.
