AIKEN, SC – MARY LOU BARLOW, 82, died Friday, March 6, 2009 at her residence in Aiken.
A native of Florence, SC, Miss Barlow was a daughter of the late John Howard and Marjorie Steele Barlow. She received her AB. from Coker College in Hartsville, SC, in 1947 and her M.A. from Appalachian State University in Boone, NC, in 1955. She did graduate work beyond her masters at the University of South Carolina in Columbia. Miss Barlow taught for many years in the South Carolina Public Schools, first at St. Paul’s High School, Adams Run, SC, then Macedonia High School, Macedonia, SC, and North Augusta High School before coming to Aiken, where she taught at Aiken High School for 36 years. She was a member of the Aiken County Hospital Auxiliary and served as vice-president for 4 years, and was also a member of the Aiken / Barnwell Mental Health Board and formerly served as its vice-chairman. She attended Lighthouse Baptist Church.
Survivors include her sister, Joan B. (Mrs. John J.) Douglas of Albuquerque, NM, and several nieces and nephews.
The funeral service will be held Monday at 3:30 PM at Shellhouse – Rivers Funeral Home, 715 East Pine Log Rd., Aiken, SC, with The Rev. Marion Britton officiating. Interment will follow in the historic Bethany Cemetery.
