Shirley Hill Hasty

September 17, 1928 — January 10, 2016

AIKEN, SC - Mrs. Shirley Hill Hasty, age 87, peacefully passed away on Sunday, January 10, 2016, at Aiken Regional Hospital. Shirley was born September 17, 1928, in Flint, Michigan; one of nine children born to Ernest Lee Hill and Mildred McMaster Hill. She spent her early years growing up on a dairy farm in Michigan and at a young age became a lifelong fan of baseball, especially pulling for the Detroit Tigers. Shirley attended Kalamazoo College in Kalamazoo, MI, graduating with a Bachelor’s degree in History and Mathematics. She continued her studies at Andover Newton Theological Seminary near Boston, MA, where she graduated in 1952 with a Master of Religious Education Degree. Andover Newton is also where Shirley met and soon married Jack Hasty. Shirley and Jack celebrated 60 years of marriage until his death in 2012. In addition to being a loving and caring wife to Jack and mother to two children, Shirley was significantly involved with the women’s mission organizations at the churches she attended over the years. Shirley also went on to obtain a Masters in Education from the University of South Carolina. She then taught Social Studies at Schofield and South Aiken High School for many years before retiring in 1989. Upon retirement, Shirley really loved ‘playing bad golf’ with Jack and traveling to several continents. She continued to follow baseball - occasionally going to Atlanta or Detroit to see them play. One of Shirley’s favorite pastimes was sewing for herself and her family and spending time cooking and baking with her three granddaughters. Shirley will be greatly missed and fondly remembered for her generous and giving spirit. Shirley is survived by a daughter, Nancy Kierspe (George) of Palm Beach Gardens, FL; a son Tim Hasty (Donna) of Aiken, SC; three granddaughters Erin Joehnk (Marc), Catherine Beck (Jerry) and Sarah Hasty, and a great grand daughter, Mary Corbin Beck,– all of Aiken, SC; sisters Helen Bouvier and Carol Dunatchik – all of Michigan; and many nephews and nieces. In addition to her husband, Jack, she was preceded in death by five brothers, Clark Hill, Douglas Hill, Earl Hill, Floyd Hill, and Ralph Hill, and a sister Lucile Walker. The family will receive friends Friday evening from 5 until 7 o’clock at Shellhouse Rivers Funeral Home. A memorial service will be held Saturday morning at 11 o’clock at First Baptist Church, Aiken, SC. In lieu of flowers, the family suggests that memorials be made to ACTS (Area Churches Together Serving) 340 Park Ave. SW, Aiken, SC 29801 or to the missions program of First Baptist Church, 120 Chesterfield St NW, Aiken, SC 29801.
