Harvey Ryder Delaney, Jr.

May 9, 1941 — April 13, 2009

SUMMERVILLE, SC – Mr. Harvey Ryder Delaney, Jr., born May 8, 1941 in Ayer, MA, the son of the late Harvey Ryder Delaney, Sr. and Augustine H. Passino. A Mass of Christian Burial will be held at 11:00 AM Thursday at St. Mary Help of Christians Catholic Church with Father James L. LeBlanc celebrant. Final prayers and commendations will follow in Calvary Cemetery. Harvey married Mary Jo Bonnette-Thomas on August 20, 2005 after a 20-year courtship. Harvey spent his youth living in many places in the United States and abroad because of his father’s army career. He graduated from Plattsburgh High School, Plattsburgh, NY and State University of New York/Plattsburgh. Immediately after college he began his student activities career first at Elmira College, New York then Seton Hall University and his career/retirement ended in June 2005 after working at State University of New York at Oneonta for 23 years as Director of Student Activities. Harvey’s love of his work and his students is reflective in the number of students who entered the student activities field and those who kept in contact with him over the years. He was awarded the National Association of Campus Activities Founders Award in February 2004. After retirement Harvey moved to the Charleston area. He lived in Summerville at the time of his death. He is survived by his wife Mary Jo, two stepsons, John Thomas, Aiken, Todd (Kathleen Waters Thomas) Thomas, Aiken; four grandchildren, Bryson Thomas, Reid Thomas, Casey Thomas, Hayden Thomas, Aiken; sister-in-law, Lynn (Jimmy) Bolton and their sons Dewayne and Chris Bolton; and his puppy Duffy. In lieu of flowers, memorials may be directed to the Harvey R. Delaney, Jr. Account, c/o SUNY College at Oneonta Foundation, 308 Netzer Admin. Building, SUNY/Oneonta, Oneonta, NY 13820.
