AIKEN, SC – LLEWELLYN JARRETTE BURCKHALTER III, 82, beloved husband of LeClair Anderson Burckhalter, died Tuesday, April 21, 2009 at his residence.
Mr. Burckhalter was born December 11, 1926 to Helen Marsh and Llewellyn Jarrette Burckhalter, Jr. at the family home on Whiskey Road in Aiken. He grew up in Aiken, attended Aiken City Schools and worked at the Graniteville Mills while he was in high school. He then attended the Citadel, and served in the Navy during World War II. Mr. Burckhalter worked at the U.S. Post Office and then Farmers and Merchants Bank, before beginning a 31 year career with DuPont as the head of traffic and transportation at the Savannah River Site.
Survivors in addition to his wife LeClair, include two sons, Dr. L. Jarrette (Cindy) Burckhalter IV of Orangeburg, and Thomas Anderson (Teresa) Burckhalter of Beaufort; two granddaughters, Tiffany (Andy) Hunter, Orangeburg and Megan (John) Harrison, Columbia; two great-grandchildren, Andrew Hydrick Hunter and Annabelle Holliday Hunter; a brother, Walter Marsh (Jewel) Burckhalter; a niece, Julie (Jimmy) Cranford; and a nephew, Marsh (Lisa) Burckhalter.
A graveside service will be held Thursday at 3:00 PM in the Millbrook Baptist Church Cemetery, followed by a memorial service at 4:00 PM at First Presbyterian Church, with The Rev. Dr. David Cozad and Jane Keisler officiating. The family will receive friends at the church following the memorial service.
