Michael Alonzo Padgett

August 24, 1946 — March 9, 2016

AIKEN, SC – MICHAEL A. PADGETT, 69, died Wednesday, March 09, 2016 at his residence. A native of Aiken, Michael was a son of the late Alonzo A. and Eileen Cumbee Padgett. He grew up in Aiken and graduated from Aiken High School.in 1964 “Never Before Like 64”.  Mike was a member of the Hornets baseball and football teams.  He attended USC-Aiken and eventually moved to Summerville, SC and then Columbia, SC.  Michael worked for Daniel Construction in Iran and Saudi Arabia in the 1970’s and early 80’s.  During his years with Daniel, he traveled through Cyprus, Africa, Greece, Turkey and many other European countries.  He returned to South Carolina in 1983 and earned his license as a General Contractor and was co-owner of Plyler & Padgett Quality Homes in Ballentine, SC. He then worked for John S. Clark Construction as a Superintendent overseeing the building of many retail stores and distribution centers until retiring in 2008. While in Saudi Arabia, Mike was a Project Manager for the KAIA Haj Terminal, New Jeddah International Airport for His Majesty, King Fahd Ibn Abdulaziz.  During his stay in the Middle East, Mike was very active in tennis, squash, running, softball and scuba diving, diving many times in the Red Sea.  Mike was an avid Gamecock fan, golfer, and fisherman.  He enjoyed deep-sea fishing expeditions with his brothers and fishing for shellcrackers at the lake.  He especially looked forward to the Padgett family camping vacation every fall at Edisto Beach.  Most of all he loved watching his six grandchildren play their sports and music and spending quality time with them.   Survivors include three daughters, Nichol Gregory (Mark), Aiken, Dina Grant (Steve), Johnson City, TN and Jamie Ratti (Ryne), Temecula, CA; a son, Jason Padgett, Shelby, NC; six grandchildren, Regan Gregory, Collin Gregory, Hollie Shuler, Joey Shuler, Gavin Ratti and Harper Ratti; three step-grandchildren, Gabby Grant, Morgan Grant and Stephen Grant, two sisters, Barbara Geiger, Columbia, SC, Susan Morris (Bruce), Aiken; three brothers, Tommy Padgett (Cynthia), Aiken, Tim Padgett, Evans, GA and Troy Padgett (Katrell), Martinez, GA., as well as  many nieces and nephews. The family will receive friends Saturday afternoon beginning at 4 o’clock at Shellhouse – Rivers Funeral Home followed by the funeral service at 5 o’clock. The Rev. Dr. Christopher Crotwell will officiate. In lieu of flowers, memorial contributions may be directed to South Aiken Presbyterian Church, 1711 Whiskey Rd., Aiken, SC 29803.
