AIKEN, SC – Mr. Claude Green Stephens, 90, died May 10, 2009 at his residence.
Funeral services will be held at 2:00 PM Wednesday at Millbrook Baptist Church with Rev. Dr. Eddie Leopard officiating. Interment will follow in Sunset Memory Gardens.
Pallbearers will be his grandsons. Honorary pallbearers will be the Bill Whalen Sunday School Class, the Millbrook Whittlers, Calvin Lee and Carey Mathison.
Mr. Stephens was born in Wolf City, TX, a son of the late Albert B. and Corrine Rogers Stephens. He served in the US Army 3rd Armored Division during WWII, where he received numerous honors. He moved to Aiken in 1951 from Orange, TX. He retired from E.I. DuPont, was a member of the Masonic Lodge #156, and coached little league baseball for seven years. As a dedicated member of Millbrook Baptist Church, he helped form the Whittlers Club and helped start the Rose Garden at Millbrook. He was a member of Local 709 Structural Ironworkers Union, and was instrumental in starting the chapter in Augusta, GA.
Survivors include his beloved wife since 1985, Sara Knight Owens Stephens; children, Roger Wade (Pamela) Stephens, Aiken, Loren Dale Stephens, Aiken, Anne (Ed) Weis, Aiken, Sheila (Ray) Cain, Aiken, Danny (Beth) Owens, Wake Forest, NC; nine grandchildren and five great grandchildren.
In addition to his parents, he was preceded in death by his first wife, Muriel E. Lockwood Stephens, and eight siblings.
