AIKEN - Cornelia Safford Zapp died April 29, 2016 at the age of 101 at her home in Cumberland Village, Aiken. She was born in Potsdam, New York January 9, 1915, the second of the five children of Wilhelmina Emerson Safford, a native of Bathurst, New Brunswick, Canada and Edwin Ruthven Safford, Jr. She was the beloved wife of the late Robert L. Zapp, to whom she had been married for 62 years. She lived for many years in Florham Park and Short Hills, New Jersey, and moved to Hilton Head, SC in 1977 upon her husband's retirement. She had resided at Cumberland Village since 2003. She was very interested in the history of her country and of her family in the North Country of New York state. She traveled happily in summers with her sister Sarah (on the Canadian National out of Montreal) to visit her grandmother Emerson's farm near Bathurst, and not so happily to her stern grandfather Safford's home in Glens Falls, NY. Through her Canadian-born mother, she acquired a life-long affection for Britain and things British, and she was fortunate to have lived in London for three years during one of her husband's overseas assignments. She was a great reader and loved her Wall Street Journal to the end. She is survived by sons Robert S. Zapp (and wife Susan) of Huntington, CT, Philip E. Zapp (and wife Marlene) of Aiken, and David E. Zapp (and wife Kathy) of Vashon Island, WA; grandchildren R. Benjamin Zapp, Sarah E. Northington (and husband William), and Laura S. Zapp; and great-grandchildren Reese, Elijah, and Wyatt Northington. She is also survived by her beloved sister Sarah Safford Guilford of Cheshire, CT and many nieces and nephews. The family acknowledges gratefully the care, compassion, and understanding of the staff of Right at Home of the CSRA..The family also wishes to recognize the kindness and support of so many members of the Cumberland Village staff, present and past.
