AIKEN, SC -- Durham Steele Hyman, age 93, died Monday, June 01, 2009, at home. Graveside services will be held at Bethany Cemetery on Thursday, June 4 at 11:00 am. Dr. Fred Andrea of First Baptist Church will officiate. He is survived by his wife of 69 years, Louise Westermann Hyman; three sons, William Durham Hyman (Patti) of Huntsville, Alabama, Paul Martin Hyman (Mary) of Aiken, and David Vernon Hyman (Denise) of Aiken; five grandchildren, David Hyman (Betsy), Stephanie H. Martin (Robert), Phillip Hyman, Leigh H. Ryan (Tim), Brad Hyman (Lauren); and four great grandchildren. Mr. Hyman was born on September 18, 1915 in Richmond, Va. to the late William Durham and Mary Steele Hyman. He was a graduate of John Marshall High School and Smithdeal-Massey Business College. He joined the DuPont Company at the Spruance Film plant in Richmond in February 1940. He served as accounting supervisor prior to his transfer to the Savannah River Plant in Aiken as payroll supervisor in September 1952. He and Louise joined First Baptist Church in 1952. He retired from DuPont SRP in 1980 as chief supervisor of the Procurement and General Services Division with 40 years of service. He was a veteran of World War II, having served in the army from 1943 to 1946 as an administrative officer (Lieutenant) in the Army Medical Corp. During this time he participated in the invasion of Kwajalein Island in the Pacific Theater. He also participated in the establishment and operation of the Field Hospital on Kwajalein Island. The family will receive friends at Shellhouse Funeral Home 924, Hayne Ave., Aiken, SC on Wednesday, June 3, 2009 from 6-7 pm.
