COLUMBIA, SC - Anne P. Elliott, 91, of Columbia passed away on June 24th, 2016.
A memorial service will be held 11:00 AM Monday, June 27, 2016 at the St. John's United Methodist Church Chapel, 104 Newberry St NW, Aiken, SC 29801 with the Rev. Joseph M. Crump officiating. The family will receive friends following the service. Interment will be private in Aiken Memorial Gardens.
She was born January 22nd, 1925 to William K. and Dewey S. Petticrew in Roanoke, Virginia. She graduated from Madison College in Harrisonburg, Virginia and went on to Charleston, West Virginia where she taught rural residents how to cook with electric stoves rather than coal. There she met her husband, John F. Elliott, who was working for Dupont.
They moved to Aiken, South Carolina where both of them were active in the community. She obtained a Master’s in special education and taught children at the Hitchcock Center, sponsored by Easter Seal. Governor Carroll Campbell named her chair of the committee which was instrumental in creating Baby Net for South Carolina. She also assisted in building Helping Hands, the shelter for abused children in Aiken. Governor Jim Hodges appointed her to serve on the South Carolina Parole Board from 2001 to 2003.
She was predeceased by her brother, William K. Petticrew, Jr. Her husband John died in July 2001. She leaves behind her daughter, Pam Elliott, of Greenville, S.C., her son Scott, and his wife Mary Montgomery Elliott, along with their children John Douglas, Frances Anne and Will, and her son Jay Elliott. She also has two surrogate grandchildren, Matthew Miller, of Newark, Delaware and Jason Miller, of Fort Wayne, Indiana. Her best friend, Reatha Scott, was at her side to care for her when she died.Together with her husband, they left this world a better place than they found it.
