Charles Sarkany

December 7, 1933 — June 27, 2016

AIKEN, SC – CHARLES L. SARKANY, 82, beloved husband of Linda Hale Sarkany, died Monday, June 27, 2016 at his residence.      A native of Rozsnyo′, Hungary, Charles was the son of the late Kalman and Jolan Hubay Sarkany.  After fleeing Hungary in 1944, Charles and his family lived as refugees in Germany near Ansbach, Bavaria from 1945-50.  His family immigrated to the United States in October, 1950 and settled in Stillwater, OK.  Charles graduated from Oklahoma State University with a B.S. in Civil Engineering. During college he spent his summers in the fire tower in Riggins, ID working for the U.S. Forest Service.  He fulfilled his duty as a Ready Reserve in the US Army.  He was a member of Chi Epsilon, a National Honorary Civil Engineering Fraternity.  Charles lived in Aiken since 1990 and retired from Bechtel at the Savannah River Site.  He was a charter member of Cedar Creek Church, member of American Society of Civil Engineers, Aiken Senior Men’s Club, Highpointers Club and Aiken Gem and Mineral Society.  He also volunteered at Aiken Regional Medical Centers with The Mended Hearts.  Summers found him out West in the mountains he loved, and he was able to summit all but two in the lower 48 States. In 2002 Blue Cross Blue Shield of SC honored Charles with one of its “Ageless Heroes” awards, giving him top honors in the “Vigor and Vitality” category.      Survivors, in addition to his wife, Linda, include two daughters, Regina Scott (Richard), Claremont, VA, Nichole Werner, Columbia, SC; three sons, Andrew Sarkany, Star, ID, Richard Sarkany, Renton, WA, William Werner, Hopkins, SC; six grandchildren, Savanna Scott, Alex Scott, Lucia Sarkany, Amelie Sarkany, Henry Sarkany, and Jasper Sarkany.         A Celebration of Life will be Friday evening July 22 from 6 until 8 o’clock at Shellhouse – Rivers Funeral Home.
