Floyd George Hopkins

February 19, 1926 — July 4, 2016

NORTH AUGUSTA - Floyd George Hopkins was born February 19, 1926 in Huntington, WV to William Curtis and Ina Bobbitt Hopkins. He was the second of seven siblings growing up in the Charleston/St. Albans, WV area until relocating his family to South Florida in 1966. He lived a long and fruitful life giving glory to God in all that he did. He was a faithful member of the Methodist church receiving Christ as a teen. In South Florida, he was a member of Plantation United Methodist Church while also serving as President of the Ft. Lauderdale chapter of the Full Gospel Business Men’s Fellowship and later serving as a Florida Field Representative. He attended various Assembly of God churches in the cities in which he worked away from home. Upon retiring to Aiken, SC in 1999, he became a member of River of Life Church, later attending Living Hope Fellowship. He was a pillar and patriarch of faith to both his family and the churches he attended. Second to God, family was Floyd’s priority in life. He always made sure that his family knew he loved them, but more importantly that they were loved by God. Recently he celebrated his 90th birthday surrounded by his children, grandchildren, and great-grandchildren. It was a beautiful celebration of his life where he was honored and loved. He is survived by: his wife - Joanna Pettit Hopkins of North Augusta, SC; his children – George Stephen Hopkins, Janice Hopkins Moccia, Constance Hopkins Gonzalez, and Carol Hopkins Williams; his three siblings – Anna Lee Hopkins Pullen, William Curtis Hopkins, and Raymond Neal Hopkins; his grandchildren - Christopher Hopkins, Heather Hopkins Steffan, Aaron Hopkins, Constance Moccia Loy, Joanna Moccia Kerr, Rebecca Moccia, Seth O’Dell, Wade Williams, Victoria Gonzalez, Adam O’Dell, Matthew O’Dell, Blake Williams, Cole Williams, and Chase Williams; and his great-grandchildren - Tyler Hopkins, Cameron Steffan, Joshua Hopkins, Gabriel Steffan, Benjamin Hopkins, Skylar Hopkins, and Bryson Steffan. Floyd graduated from Charleston High School after interrupting his studies to serve in the Army Air Corps at the end of WWII. He then attended Morris Harvey College and married his lifetime sweetheart, Joanna Christine Pettit, on November 23, 1946. Together they had six children, two of which, Rebecca Hopkins O’Dell and Linda Christine Hopkins, were already in heaven welcoming him home. Throughout his life he faithfully provided for his family working as a mechanical engineer and job supervisor. He and his brother, William (Bill) Curtis Hopkins, his best friend in life, formed Electric Motor Service Company working their entire lives together in business. From an early age he had a passion for flying, miraculously surviving several plane crashes that caused him to adopt Psalm 91 as one of his favorite Scriptures. He died on July 4, 2016 (Independence Day) after spending a little over a week in the hospital surrounded by his loving wife and children. How appropriate his passing on this day as he received independence from his failing body and passed peacefully into the eternal and loving arms of our Lord and Savior Jesus Christ. Floyd, affectionately known as George, was dearly loved and will be sorely missed. He was a man that made a quiet but profound impression on all those God brought across his path. Holidays were often an open invitation to strangers that later would become his friends and family. He encouraged and helped many young men, mentoring them in the ways of God. In summary, he has left a legacy of lives impacted by God. Visitation and memorial services to be held at SHELLHOUSE-RIVERS FUNERAL HOME, INC., 715 E.
