Aiken – Mrs. Irdell Smith Cromer, wife of 67 years to the late John Andrew Cromer, Jr., died peacefully Friday, February 3rd, 2017 (0n her late husband’s birthday) at Generations of Batesburg Assisted Living. She leaves behind her daughter Charlene Heyward (Henry), her son John Andrew (Andy) Cromer III; four grandchildren: John Andrew Cromer IV, Crystin Whinghter (Nathan), Justin Heyward (Mandy), Lauren Simmons (Jeremy), 3 great-grandchildren: Charlee & Andie Satcher, and Rhett Heyward. Mrs. Cromer was born in Keysville Georgia to Dr. & Mrs. Berry Smith and was raised with sister, Gussie Smith Hollins and brother, Berry Smith in Blythe Georgia. Her mother, Macy owned a country store where she learned to play pool and developed her love for dancing. Irdell attended and graduated Blythe High School where she competed in basketball. After graduation, she attended a Junior College in Augusta Georgia. She was employed by Jerigans Hardware, where she met her late husband, John Andrew Cromer Jr. Most of their married life was spent in Augusta GA, Blythe, GA and Aiken, SC. Irdell had a passion for cooking, fishing, gardening, board games, and spending time with her friends. She made you feel loved with her enthusiastic big hugs. She loved her Sunday school class, The Truth Seekers, at Aiken First Baptist. Funeral services will be held at 11:00 AM, Tuesday, February 7, 2017 at Aiken’s First Baptist Church with Rev. Dr. Fred W. Andrea III officiating. The family will receive friends before the service in the church parlor at 10:00. Interment will be held in historic Bethany Cemetery immediately following the service.
