March 23, 1938 — February 6, 2017

AIKEN, SC - JOAN MARGARET COPLAND "PEG" SMITH, 78, widow of James Calvin Smith, entered into rest Monday, February 6, 2017 at University Hospital, Augusta, GA. A native of Oakville, Ontario, Canada, Peg was a daughter of the late Rev. Edward Bruce and Margaret Lochead Copland.  She was a homemaker and had made Aiken her home since 1971.  She was a member of “Ladies of Earlmont” and the “Cedar Creek Red Mad Hatters”.  Peg possessed great love for her family, friends and Yorkie Bella. Survivors include two daughters, Dale Smith Blackwell and Deborah Smith Glisson (Steve), all of Aiken; a son, Bruce Frederick Smith (Karen), Dawsonville, GA; six grandchildren, Kandace Hite, Amber Chase, Jacob Smith, Cara Glisson, Jeffrey Glisson, Amanda Glisson; two great-grandsons, Ryker and Turner Hite; a brother, John A. Copland (Elaine), Ottawa, Ontario, Canada; extended family and special friends, Mark C. Chase, Steven E. Hite, Diny Darby, D.J. Russel and Ginny Grief. In addition to her husband and parents, Peg was preceded in death by a son, Jeffrey Martin Smith. A memorial service will be held Friday afternoon, February 10th at 2 o’clock at Shellhouse – Rivers Funeral Home with The Rev. Martha Ebel officiating.  The family will receive friends following the service. In lieu of flowers memorials may be made to the Leukemia and Lymphoma Society (www.lls.org) in remembrance of her son, Jeffrey Martin Smith.
