Dr. Arthur Edward Barnes

AIKEN, SC - Dr. Arthur Edward Barnes passed away peacefully in bed while on vacation in Aiken, South Carolina, on March 22, 2017. He is survived by his devoted wife of 47 years, Louise J. Barnes and his four loving children, Ronald Barnes (Mary Beth), Douglas Barnes (Jennifer), Heather Barnes (Mathew Damico) and Marissa Barnes (Jean Se-guro), as well as 12 grandchildren (Ronny, Michael, Laura, and Gregory Barnes; Samantha, Ryan, Danielle, Maggie and Sofia Barnes; Aldo Damico; Ellery and Arthur Seguro). He is preceded in death by his brother, the Rev. Richard Barnes and his parents, Francis Nichols and Marion Moffett Barnes. Born on May 3, 1926, Arthur's life spanned an amazing nine decades. He told stories of his mother feeding homeless people during the Great Depression. He served in the Navy during WWII, and sailed on the U.S.S. Wasp battleship from San Diego to Hawaii, where he was stationed. Art recalled a heavily guarded "black box" on the ship, and later believed he had traveled with some of the components of the atomic bombs that ultimately ended the war. Although he was a radio engineer during for the Navy, his lifetime career became medicine. Art returned to Washington & Jefferson College to finish his Bachelors of Science, and went on to Temple University in Philadelphia for a Doctorate in Medicine. Art was a kind, gentle man, with a strong intellectual and academic drive. Well into his final years, he could talk in great detail about the research experiments he conducted with chicken eggs at the University of Pittsburgh. He ultimately found great satisfaction as a general practitioner at the Russelton Medical Group, at the Miners Clinic in New Kensington, PA. Art was an active layman at St. Andrew's Episcopal church in New Kensington and a devoted Pittsburgh Steelers fan. Arthur shared his love of tennis and skiing with his family, who in turn loved taking him down the double black diamonds. After he re-tired he enjoyed golfing at Nemacolin Woodlands with his wife Louise. His loss is deeply felt by his friends and family. An internment is planned for a later date at Sewickley Cemetery, in Sewickley, PA.
