MONTMORENCI, SC – CHARLES EUGENE SIDES, JR. USMC, Ret., 78, beloved husband of Denise Covington Sides, died Monday, October 26, 2009 at Select Specialty Hospital, Augusta, GA. Born in Nauvoo, AL, Mr. Sides was a son of the late Charles Eugene, Sr., and Eunice Leonard Sides. He grew up in Alabama before entering the Marine Corps. He was a veteran of both Korea and Vietnam, and was stationed all over the world. He was particularly proud of having served at Chosin Reservoir. Charles retired as a Gunnery Sergeant. After he retired from the Marine Corps, Charles moved to Aiken, SC and was a DI and instructor with the NJROTC at Aiken High School on the Schofield Campus in the mid 1970’s. Survivors, in addition to his beloved wife Denise, include a daughter, Lisa Kaye Sides, Aiken, step-daughter, Misty (David) Magness, Aiken, step-son, Rick (Julie) Hunt, Pooler, GA, two step-grandchildren, Austen and Brooke Magness, two sisters, Linda Saucier, Cleveland, AL and Nancy West, Aiken and a brother, Fred Sides, Aiken. He was preceded in death by his parents, first wife, Cora Ruth Tuck Sides, sister, Martha Susie Sides, and two brothers William Ralph “Bo” Sides, and Jerry Earl Sides. Funeral services will be held Thursday at 10:00 AM in the chapel of Shellhouse – Rivers Funeral Home, with Rev. Mike Sides officiating. Interment, with military honors will follow at 4:00 PM at Arabi Cemetery in Arabi, GA. The family will receive friends from 6 to 8 PM Wednesday at the funeral home.
