Jesse Leon Widener

AIKEN, SC – JESSE LEON WIDENER, 84, beloved husband of Adie Herron Widener, died Tuesday, November 10, 2009 at the Charlie Norwood VA Medical Center in Augusta, GA. A native and lifelong resident of Aiken County, Mr. Widener was a son of the late Artis Leon and Rebecca Morris Widener. He was a U. S. Army veteran of World War II, serving in the China-Berma-India Theater Campaign and participated in the 580 Mile Berma March, receiving 3 bronze service stars, a good conduct medal, and a victory medal. Mr. Widener retired from the Coca Cola Bottling Company. He attended Bethel Baptist Church. He loved his family, and he loved to fish. Survivors, in addition to his wife Adie, include three daughters and sons-in-law; Debbie and Neal Riddle, Aiken, Tonya and R. W. McCormick, Lexington, SC and Donna and Joey Berry, Aiken, five grandchildren and their spouses; Heather and Joel Pack, Aiken, Jason and Leslie Waters, Lexington, SC, Leslee and John Fortabary, Columbia, SC, Hannah and Kole Helvie, Aiken and Jonathan Berry, Woodstock, GA, a great-grandchild, Chloe Hayes Pack, two sisters; Louise Boyleston, Pensacola, FL and Rebecca Ann and her husband Robert Kupesky, Richmond, VA, and a number of nieces and nephews. In addition to his parents, a sister, Mildred Hanlin and four brothers; Artis, Johnny, Harry and Leonard “Buck” Widener preceded him in death. Funeral services will be held Thursday at 2:00 PM at Bethel Baptist Church with The Rev.’s Brancie Stephens and Jim Fanning officiating. Interment, with military honors, will follow in Aiken Memorial Gardens. Pallbearers will be Jesse’s BBQ Crew; Eddie Herron, Gene Herron, Jeff Herron, Lee Benson, Jonathan Fanning and LaRon Black. Honorary Pallbearers will be the Men’s Sunday School Class of Bethel Baptist Church. The family will receive friends from 6 to 8 PM Wednesday at Shellhouse – Rivers Funeral Home.
