AIKEN, SC -- Mrs. Jamie L. Thompson, 81 passed away on Feb. 16, 2010 in Aiken after a long and courageous battle with Alzheimer’s Disease. She was born on April 16,1928 in Rienzi, MS. She graduated from the Osceola High School, Osceola, AR where she was a star basketball player. After high school she ventured to Japan where she worked as a civilian secretary for the US Air Force. It was there that she met her future husband, Col. Royal S. Thompson. They were married in Phoenix City, AL on Oct. 4, 1952. She had two children and two stepsons. She was primarily a homemaker who was in her element as she moved the family to several duty stations. After retirement from the Air Force in 1968 the family moved to Springfield, MO. Here she started a successful career as a real estate agent. After a “second” retirement she and her husband moved to Augusta, GA in 1978 where she much enjoyed spending time with her twin brother, Sammie D. Wilhite. She has been a resident of Aiken for 10 years. She is survived by her children Sandra (David) Carroll, Aiken; Robert A. Thompson, Charlotte, NC and Bruce E. (Chelle) Thompson Santa Fe, NM and William Thompson; grandchildren Robbie Thompson, Colorado Springs, and Jamie (Doug) LeBrun Laurel, MT; great-grandchild Katie LeBrun, twin brother Sammie D (Clara) Wilhite, Little Rock, AR, and sister Mary Frances Owens, Mt.Juliet, TN. She is also survived by several nieces and nephews. She was proceeded in death by her husband Col. Royal Thompson (USAF, Ret.), brother Troy Wilhite and sisters Iris Thompson and Eva Mae Golden. The funeral is scheduled for Friday February 19 at 10 AM at Shellhouse - Rivers Funeral Home, 715 East Pine Log Road, Aiken. The internment will be private. The family would like to extend gratitude to the wonderful staff of Shadow Oaks who devotedly cared for her for the past 20 months.
