Aiken-Dr. Allen Shepard,89, died Feb. 18 at his home. He was the widower of Susan Ellen Shepard who preceded him in death July 23, 2000. Dr. Shepard was the son of the late Mr.& Mrs. Samuel A. Shepard of Palm Beach, FL and brother of the late Dr. V.S. Shepard of Palm Beach.
He is survived by a son, Christopher, of Burlington, Ky, a daughter, Betsy Shepard of Surry, Va, and two grandchildren; Sam Anderson-Shepard and Eli Anderson-Shepard; and a very special friend and caregiver, Nelva Bowen, Aiken, SC. He was an alumnus of Duke University and Hahnemann Medical College of Philadelphia. He served as a medical officer in the U.S. Navy from 1945-1948. while practicing medicine in Key West, FL, he was the Medical Advisor to the local draft board and president of Monroe County Medical Society.
In 1960 he retired from family practice to enter training as an anesthesiologist at Charity Hospital of New Orleans. He was certified by the American Board of Anesthesiology and the American College of Anesthesiology, and was granted Fellowship in the American College of Chest Physicians.
In 1988 he retired as Chief of the Dept of Anesthesia, Holyoke Hospital, Holyoke, Ma. He was the author of numerous medical articles which appeared in journals about anesthesia and other medical journals.
During the five years following his retirement he was an instructor in the Medical Assistant Program of Kee Technical College, Newport News, VA.
He was a member of St. Thaddeus Episcopal Church and an active volunteer and supporter of Mead Hall Episcopal Day School. A tennis player for many years he enjoyed the sport as a member of Woodside Plantation Country Club.
A memorial service will be held at 4 PM, Saturday, Feb. 20 at St. Thaddeus Episcopal Church with the Revs. Grant Wiseman and Joseph Whitehurst officiating.
