NEW ELLENTON, SC -- S. GILMORE EAVES, SR., MD, 82, beloved husband of Barbara Powers Eaves, died Tuesday, February 23, 2010 at Aiken Regional Medical Centers.
Dr. Eaves was born January 14, 1928 in Dunbarton, SC to Frampton L. Eaves, Sr. and Maxie Hiers Eaves. He was the last born of 9 children. He attended Dunbarton Elementary and graduated from Dunbarton High School in 1944. He joined the Merchant Marines in 1945 and was stationed in Brooklyn, NY, where his first leave was on VJ Day, and he joined in the VJ Day Celebration in Times Square. While in the Merchant Marines, he was on an Army Transport, which brought combat troops back from Europe. Among those troops was his brother, a tanker in the Third Army, whom he had not seen in 3 years and ran into on the Mediterranean Sea. After his discharge from the Merchant Marines he attended the University of Chattanooga, and received a B. S. Degree in Biology. He then taught school in Greelyville, SC for 2 months before being drafted into the Army during the Korean Conflict. He served one year as a Medic in a Tank Unit at Fort Polk Louisiana. The next year he spent at Pine Bluff, Arkansas and at Fort Dietrich Maryland, where he was involved in the Germ Warfare Program. After being discharged from the Army, he worked for 10 months at Fort Dietrich in the Biological Warfare Laboratories in animal pathology, recovering bacteria from exposed animals. He then enrolled in the Medical University of South Carolina in Charleston, and graduated in 1956. Dr. Eaves completed his Internship at the Medical University Hospital and had been in practice in New Ellenton, SC since 1958, except for 8 months in 1962-63, when he was in Washington, GA. He was a member of Foreman Memorial Baptist Church in New Ellenton.
Survivors, in addition to his beloved wife Barbara, include two sons, Simeon Gilmore (Lisa) Eaves, Jr. of North Augusta and Gregory Lawton (Stefanie) Eaves, MD, Aiken, SC, seven grandchildren; Madelyn, Ansleigh and Kendall Eaves of Aiken and Kaitlin, Patrick, Sims and McKenzie Eaves of North Augusta, and a sister, Maxine Eaves Neville of Augusta, GA.
The family will receive friends from 5 to 8 PM Thursday at Shellhouse - Rivers Funeral Home, 715 East Pine Log Rd., Aiken, SC.
Funeral services will be held Friday at 11:00 AM at the graveside in Barnwell County Memorial Park, with The Rev. Brantley Bryan officiating. Pallbearers will be Bill Eaves, John Eaves, Buist Eaves, Jr., Charles Eaves, Jr., Terrell Eaves, Jeff Eaves, Joe Whitson, Jimmy Koon and Jack Neville, Jr.
In lieu of flowers, memorial contributions may be directed to Foreman Memorial Baptist Church, 207 Smith Ave., New Ellenton, SC 29809.
