AIKEN - Mr. Joseph H. Farmer, 89, died Sunday, March 7, 2010.
Inurnment will be held at 4:00 PM Friday, March 19 at the First Presbyterian Church Columbarium with the Reverend Dr. David Cozad officiating. The family will receive friends following the service.
Mr. Farmer was born in Augusta, GA, a son of the late Geames and Edna Allen Farmer. Following his graduation from high school, Mr. Farmer enrolled in Georgia Southern University. He was drafted into the US Army at the beginning of WWII in North Africa and the European Theater.
After WWII, Mr. Farmer returned to Georgia Southern to complete his college degree. Shortly after graduation he was called up to serve in the Korean War. After his Army service, he went back to college at New York University where he received his degree in nursing from NYU and Bellevue Hospital.
Mr. Farmer worked as a registered nurse for the Veterans Administration in several locations in the U.S. He moved back to Aiken and was the Director of Nursing at the Aiken County Hospital until his retirement.
He is survived by a nephew Edwin B. (Genie) Farmer, Aiken; nieces Martha Farmer Rosenberg, Greer, SC, Ann Farmer Harris, Jean Farmer King, Bobbie Farmer Bailey, Carolyn Farmer Asbey, all of Roanoke Rapids, NC.
In lieu of flowers, memorials may be directed to First Presbyterian Church, 224 Barnwell Ave., Aiken, SC 29801.
