NEW ELLENTON -- ARTHUR RAY SPEED, 56, beloved husband of Judy Carroll Speed, died Monday, April 19, 2010 at University Hospital, Augusta, GA.
A native and lifelong resident of Aiken County, Ray was a son of Betty Stephens Speed and the late Arthur B. Speed. He formerly worked as a timber marker with the U.S. Forest Service. He retired, after 20 years, from the maintenance department of the Aiken County Public Schools.
Survivors, in addition to his wife Judy, and his mother Betty, of Windsor, include his daughter, Tonya Rae Speed (Ray) Tucker, New Ellenton, two step-daughters, Shannon (Michael) Tharpe, Hepzibah, GA and Darlene Thompson, Warrenville, SC, a step-son, Daniel Woodward, Hepzibah, GA, three grandchildren, Trevor, Cameron and Taley Tucker, four step-grandchildren, Brandon Knight, Christian and Brad Lucas and Michael Tharpe, Jr., a step-great-grandson, Gage Knight, two sisters, Jean (Jimmy) Faircloth, Williston and Janet (Jamie) Scott, Williston, two nieces and a nephew.
Funeral services will be held Thursday at 2:00 PM at Shellhouse - Rivers Funeral Home, with The Rev. Lee Clamp officiating. Interment will follow in Southlawn Cemetery. Pallbearers will be Michael Tharpe, Sr., Michael Tharpe, Jr., Steve Warneke, Sonny Cushman, Kevin Creamer, Art Barsh, Jamey Faircloth and Ed Speed. Honorary Pallbearers will be former co-workers from the Maintenance Dept. of Aiken County Schools, Arnold Baughman and Billy Bell.
The family will receive friends from 6 to 8 PM Wednesday at the funeral home. Friends may call at other times at his daughter's residence in New Ellenton.
