AIKEN, SC -- ANNETTA H. "ANN" TAYLOR, 93, widow of Ira Wilson "Tom" Taylor, died Sunday, May 23, 2010 at her residence.
A native of Wilmington, DE, Mrs. Taylor was a daughter of the late Preston Pierce and Vera Jorda Haynes. She and her husband moved to Aiken in 1953 when he went to work at the Savannah River Plant. She established Tiny Tots Day Care Center, which she operated for 20 years. Over the years, Ann donated her time and volunteered for many organizations in Aiken. Among them, Tri Development Center, where she was a former member of the board of directors; the American Cancer Society; American Red Cross; and American Heart Association. She was a former member of the Aiken Hospital Auxiliary, and had volunteered over 3,000 hours. Ann was named "Woman of the Year" by the Aiken Chamber of Commerce in 1981. She was proud to have been one of only five women in the United States to receive the National Distinguished Volunteer Award from the General Federation of Women's Clubs. It was presented to her by then first lady, Nancy Reagan at the White House. She was featured in Will Cole's book, "The Many Faces of Aiken, A Pictorial History".
Survivors include her daughter, Carolyn Gibbons, Aiken, her son, Kenneth I. Taylor, Edgefield, five grandchildren,Walter Keith Gibbons, Wagener; Michele Gibbons Dempsey, Aiken; Rene' Lynn Campbell, Aiken; Brian Taylor, Ft. Mill and Amanda Daniels, Waycross, GA, four great-grandchildren, and two brothers, Richard P. Haynes, Gainesville, FL and Robert Haynes, England.
A memorial service will be held Wednesday at 11:00 AM at St. John's United Methodist Church, with The Rev. George K, Howle officiating.
