Phillip Dexter Hudgins, Jr.

March 17, 1925 — July 2, 2010

AIKEN - Mr. Phillip Dexter (“Pat”) Hudgins, Jr., 85, died Friday, July 2, 2010 at the Veterans Victory House, Walterboro, SC. A memorial service will be held at 3:00 PM on Friday, July 9 at St. Johns United Methodist Church with the Reverend Dr. George K. Howle officiating. Inurnment with military honors will follow at Bethany Cemetery. Honorary pallbearers will be members of the Marine Corps League. The family will receive friends one hour prior to the service at the church. Mr. Hudgins was born on St. Patrick’s Day in Victoria, VA, a son of the late Phillip D. and Lucy Pettus Hudgins. He is survived by his two sons, Mark Pettus (Michelle) Hudgins, Aiken, Phillip Michael (Katherine) Hudgins, Columbia; four grandchildren, Morgan Claire Hudgins, Matthew Phillip Hudgins, Sarah Elizabeth Hudgins and Laura Nell Hudgins. He also survived by his close nieces Lisa Lindquist Jones, Juneau, AK and Elizabeth Bowles, Farmville, VA and their families. In addition to his parents, he was preceded in death by his brother, Ernest Hudgins and three sisters Elizabeth Shorter, Farmville, VA; Josephine Fisher, Atlanta, GA; Elizabeth (“Betty”) Berbes, Grants Pass, OR. Pat was familiar to many residents in Aiken. After serving in the US Marine Corps during WWII, he worked for Eastern Airlines and attended the University of Miami. Moving to Aiken in the early 1950’s, he became a supervisor for E.I. DuPont at the Savannah River Plant. He coached Little League baseball, was active in Scouting, and was an avid quail hunter, golfer, and bowler. After retirement, he was a founding member of the James L. Hammonds Marine Corps League Detachment 939 in Aiken. The family has requested that memorials be made to the Marine Corps League P. O.
