James Burlin Collins, age 84, of Berkley Street, Aiken, South Carolina died on July 4, 2010.
Born September 25, 1925 in Mississippi, to the late Walter Thomas and Edna Tims Collins, he grew up in Mississippi and later lived in Tennessee before moving to Aiken many years ago to live with his sister, Allie Sue Collins Abel. Following the death of his sister, he lived with William and Jane Hankinson for the last 25 years. James worked as a janitor, hand assembler and delivered milk and newspapers prior to retiring. He was a member of First Baptist Church in Aiken and attended frequently until his health started to decline. He was a very active member of the Seniors Group also. James was well known in the downtown Aiken area where he would visit the shops, restaurants, banks and other businesses frequently during his many years in Aiken. He enjoyed attending sporting events at Aiken High School, and going on vacations to Florida.
Survivors include Mrs. Jane Hankinson of Aiken, Audrey V. Pope of Newark, New Jersey, Debbie A. Williams of Aiken, Jeffrey B. Hankinson of Minneapolis, Minnesota, Bradford B. Hankinson of North Augusta, Victor Hankinson of Alexandria, Virginia, Vincent Hankinson of Cleveland, Ohio, Quentin Holston of Charlotte, North Carolina and nine grandchildren. In addition to his parents and sister, he was preceded in death his friend Mr. William Hankinson.
Funeral services will be held at 11:00am Monday July 12 at Shellhouse Funeral Home with the Rev. Cathy Cole officiating. Interment will follow at Historic Bethany Cemetery in Aiken.
