Obituary of Duncan McDonald Thompson
Aiken, SC -- Surrounded by his family and loved ones, Duncan McDonald Thompson, 90, entered into rest at his residence on 7 Wofford Circle Friday, July 9, 2010. He was the husband of the late Alberta White Thompson, to whom he was married for 47 years. He is survived by three children, four grandchildren, and one great grandson: daughter Judith Thompson Reed of Columbia, son Duncan McDonald “Scotty” Thompson, Jr. (Gail Strickland Thompson) of Aiken, son Michael John Thompson of Aiken; grandchildren Elizabeth Reed Crosby of Columbia, Haley Thompson Grant (Simon Grant) of Aiken, Hunter Patrick Reed of Columbia, and Duncan McDonald “Scot” Thompson, III of Aiken; and great grandson, William Reed Crosby of Columbia. He is also survived by his wife Frances R. Thompson of Aiken. Duncan is remembered by a much loved extended family in his native home of Scotland.
Duncan was born near Forres, Scotland to John and Annie Forsyth Thompson. He joined the Royal Navy in July of 1938. He served aboard the H.M.S. Hood as an able seaman. Upon his trade qualification he served aboard his beloved destroyer, H.M.S. Intrepid with duties involving mine laying and torpedo operations. While serving on the H.M.S. Intrepid he participated in the Altmart incident off of Norway and conducted bosons duties evacuating British and French troops from the beaches of Dunkirk where he received wounds and lost his corned beef sandwich. Duncan went on with a trade certificate in Submarine Detection and as an ASDIC operator he served on the corvette H.M.S. Clarkia and the frigate H.M.S. Somaililand in the South Atlantic. His service led him to the port of Charleston in the early 1940s where he met and married Charleston native Alberta White. Duncan was honorably released from service in December of 1945 and was naturalized as a United States citizen in 1946.
Duncan and growing family moved to Aiken where he was employed in the Electronics and Instrumentation Division at DuPont for 34 years. He was a member of South Aiken Presbyterian and was a volunteer with the American Cancer Society. An avid and skilled wood worker, Duncan is well remembered for his many beautiful decorative and toy pieces with which he graced his family. He will be remembered as a beloved husband, father, grandfather, and friend.
Family will receive visitors at the residence of Duncan Thompson at 7 Wofford Circle, Aiken, South Carolina, Tuesday, July 13, 2010 between 7 and 9 pm. The service will be held 12 noon Wednesday, July 14, 2010 at Sunset Memorial Gardens with the Chaplain Dexter Lambert officiating.
