AIKEN, SC -- MINNIE L. BURCKHALTER McKENNA, 81, died Tuesday, July 27, 2010 at Aiken Regional Medical Centers. A native of Aiken County, Minnie was the youngest daughter of the late Mabel Favor Burckhalter McCarter and John Andrew Burckhalter. She grew up in Aiken. After her marriage to Patrick Thomas "Tom" McKenna, she moved to Westbury, Long Island, NY. She lived in Westbury for 30 years before returning to Aiken following her husband's death. She and her sister Lib lived together in Aiken for the last 33 years. Minnie was a former activities director for Anna Maria Nursing Home and the old New Ellenton Nursing Center. She was a former member and President of the Ladies Auxiliary of VFW Post 925 in Westbury, Long Island. In Aiken she was active in Pares and Spares and was a member of Memorial Baptist Church. Survivors include her son, Thomas Michael (Shelly Huggins) McKenna, Virginia Beach, VA, a sister, Elizabeth Burckhalter Walton, Aiken, a sister-in-law, Eloise Burckhalter, Aiken, ten nieces and nephews; Frances Walton Williams, Calhoun Falls, SC, Nancy Walton Perez, Texas, Janet Burckhalter, Aiken, Charles Burckhalter, North Augusta, John R. Burckhalter, Aiken, Maryann Burckhalter Coleman, North Augusta, Peter MeKenna, Aiken, Helen McKenna, Aiken, Jimmy McKenna, Peachtree City, GA and Patty Navarro, Suffolk, VA, eleven great-nieces and nephews, among them, Frank Allen Walton, whom was raised and loved by Minnie and Lib, and seventeen great-great nieces and nephews. Preceding Minnie in death, in addition to her husband and parents, were her sister Anna Belle Sassatelli and brothers, Ernest, John and Henry Burckhalter. Funeral services will be held Saturday at 10:00 AM at Shellhouse - Rivers Funeral Home with Rev. Steve Gillette officiating. Interment will follow in Bethany Cemetery. Pallbearers will be Jeff Tilley, R.J. Rider, David Williams, David Poulson, Jack Bradley, John Pike, Ron Easler and Darryl Parsons.
