AIKEN, SC -- David McBrier Lock, entered into rest Sunday, September 26, 2010 at his residence in Seabrook, SC.
Mr. Lock was born in Winston Salem, North Carolina, on November 26, 1941 to Dr. & Mrs. Frank Ray Lock. Mr. Lock is survived by his wife; Becky, two children; George (Melissa) Lock and Kelly (Joshua) Crouch, grandchildren; Joshua, Olivia, Isaiah, Araya Klockman, and Emery Crouch, all of Aiken, sisters; Erline (Charlie) Parnell of The Villages in Lady Lake, Fl. He was preceded in death by one son, David Lock Jr., his parents and his brothers Frank Ray Lock Jr., James Bonney Lock, and sisters; Amelia Owens and Joyce Hipp.
Dave Lock was a dedicated life-long and well known member of the Boy Scouts of America. In over five decades of Scouting he touched the lives of thousands of boys and
hundreds of adults in positive, productive ways. Directly and indirectly he helped train most of the adult Scout leaders in the Georgia-Carolina, Central Savannah River Area. He made Scouting possible to many boys who never knew who their benefactor was.
Dave started his Scouting career as a Boy Scout then as a young adult, who worked for a while as a paid Scouting professional, however most of his Scouting efforts were as an adult volunteer. At one time or another he held almost all positions in Scouting at the BSA district and council
level and sat on numerous regional committees. He was a Scoutmaster in Aiken at Troop 110 for 10 years. Upon moving to Beaufort, he worked with the Beaufort Wee Bee 1712 troop. His advice and opinion on Scouting issues were eagerly sought after in the greater Georgia-Carolina area.
Dave earned or was awarded many, if not most, of the honors the BSA could give. He holds the prestigious Silver Beaver Award from the Georgia-Carolina Council and District Awards of Merit from both South and North Carolina. He was awarded the Distinguished Scoutmaster
Award of Merit and was a Vigil Member of the Order of the Arrow. He held the honor of being a a multiple Course Director and Scoutmaster for the BSA Wood Badge training program and was instrumental in keeping this advanced adult training going in the Georgia-Carolina region.
Possibly his most cherished honor was a bear claw, given to him by the Russian Scouting Association naming him an honorary Russian Scout Leader. Dave held almost all BSA
adult training awards, innumerable citations and honorary awards; presented hundreds of Eagle Awards; took boys to the Jamborees; summer camps; weekend campouts, and gave a
major portion of his life to promoting the ideals and goals of Scouting to both youth and adults in North Carolina, South Carolina, and Georgia. However, he was happiest when teaching a small group of scouts a knot; the compass; to cook, or good citizenship. David Lock leaves a
legacy that will be long remembered by those who lives he touched."
Dave worked with the Beaufort Water Search and Rescue Squad, upon moving to Beaufort, in 2003, and was an avid supporter of the Tara Boys Home in Georgetown, SC.
Upon graduating from Darlington, he faithfully served in the United States Navy. He enrolled in Texas A&M, Maritime Academy, but then left and worked at Wachovia in Winston Salem, NC, where he graduated from Wake Forest University in 1973. He joined his classmates from Texas A&M Maritime Academy and they took the Texas Clipper out for its last voyage a few years back before it was sunk and made into a reef!
David spent many years in scouting in the Brownsville, and Victoria areas of Texas, and would often have his scouts camping on the King Ranch. Scouting was his love, both professionally and locally.
One of David's finest achievements, to a scout, would be the summer at Fort AP Hill, when he invited Green Barr Bill to have lunch with him and the scout troop, and he accepted!
