AIKEN - Mr. Alan Matthew Tewkesbury, 89, died Monday, September 27, 2010. Funeral services will be held at 2:00 PM Wednesday at First Presbyterian Church with the Reverend Dr. David Cozad officiating. A private interment will be held in Historic Bethany Cemetery with military honors. Honorary pallbearers will be his grandsons, son-in-law Harry Busbee, and members of the Aiken Coffee Club Mr. Tewkesbury was born in Philadelphia, PA, a son of the late Paul and Mary Jane McMakin Tewkesbury. He was a longtime resident of Aiken, graduating from Aiken High School. He was a 1949 graduate of Clemson University. He served in the South Pacific during WWII with the US Marines 1st Division. While serving, he participated in the capture and defense of Guadalcanal, Cape Gloucester and Peleliu Island. After returning to Aiken, he eventually became the Assistant Manager of SC Operations for the JM Huber Corporation. Mr. Tewkesbury was a member of Palmetto Golf Club, the Business Men's Club, Aiken Coffee Club, a member of Clemson IPTAY and Alumni Association, Past President of Hopeland Gardens, and served on the Board of the Aiken Housing Authority. He was also a long time summer resident of Cedar Mountain, NC. As a member of First Presbyterian Church, Mr. Tewkesbury was a Sunday School teacher, an Elder, Treasurer and Deacon. He was also a Trustee Emeritus of Faith Memorial Chapel in Cedar Mountain, NC. He is survived by his loving wife Harriet Henderson Tewkesbury; two daughters, Marie Tewkesbury, Spartanburg, SC, Elizabeth "Beth" T. (Harry) Busbee, Columbia, SC; two sons, Edward P. "Ted" (Fran) Tewkesbury, Aiken, Alan M. (Karen) Tewkesbury, Jr., Spartanburg; seven grandchildren, Matt Tewkesbury, William Busbee, Rick Tewkesbury, Edward Tewkesbury, Preston Busbee, Gracie Tewkesbury, Annie Tewkesbury; and a number of nieces and nephews. In addition to his parents, he was preceded in death by a sister, Helen Laird and a brother, Paul Tewkesbury, Jr. The family has requested that memorials be made to First Presbyterian Church, 224 Barnwell Ave., Aiken, SC 29801, to Faith Memorial Chapel in Cedar Mountain, NC, c/o Church Treasurer, P.O. Box 10444, Greenville, SC 29603, or to Rocky Hill Baptist Church, P.O. Box 509, Cedar Mountain, NC 28718.
