Mr. Roy Everett Luallen, 88, died Thursday, November 18, 2010 at University Hospital in Augusta.
Mr. Luallen was born in Lake City, Tennessee, a son of the late Bart Luallen and Glossie Stephens. He had a love of music, and performed in a gospel quartet as a teenager, as well as appearing regularly on the “Midday Merry-Go-Round” radio show out of Knoxville, Tennessee. On WNOX he performed alongside notables such as a young Chet Atkins, among others.
He was employed with Chrysler Corporation in Detroit prior to joining the Army. As a veteran of WWII, he saw action in North Africa, Italy, France, Belgium and Germany. At the end of hostilities in Europe he was assigned to General Patton’s headquarters in Heidelberg, Germany. He attained the rank of Master Sergeant and was the recipient of a number of campaign ribbons and commendations.
After honorable discharge from the Army, he was employed at TVA, National Guard Headquarters and at the Oak Ridge facility in Tennessee. He and his family relocated to Aiken in 1952, where he completed a career with DuPont at the Savannah River Site.
He was a past Commander of Aiken Chapter 43, Disabled American Veterans (DAV), and a member of Aiken American Legion Post 26. Members of these posts will be the honorary pallbearers.
He was devoted to his family, and is survived by his wife of 69 years, Jean Reed Luallen, daughter Sharon Luallen Bankert (Karl) of Aiken, adored grandchildren, Brent Lundy of Columbia, SC and Brooke Lundy of Los Angeles, CA.
In addition to his parents, he was preceded in death by his half-sister Louise Lax of Paris, TN.
He leaves behind his niece and nephew, Roy Lax, West Palm Beach, FL and Linda Lax Havasy (Stephen) of Atlanta, GA. Cousins Elizabeth Lee (Raymond), Knoxville, TN, Barbara Lankford (Ted) of Robbins, TN and Dunnellon, FL, Ellen Thomas (Taylor) of Vonore, TN, Phil Waters (Kim) of Beaufort, SC, Elizabeth Bornscheuer (Todd), Aiken, SC, and Jonathan Waters of Aiken.
The family would like to express their gratitude to the many friends he made over the years in Aiken, some who only knew him as “Mr. Roy”, but they brightened his days immensely. Especially to the Breakfast Group and staff at the Waffle House on Whiskey Road, where his morning ritual consisted of meeting old friends and new, sharing news, stories and laughter. We thank you all.
Visitation will be held on Sunday, November 21, 2010 from 3:00 – 5:00 p.m. at Shellhouse - Rivers Funeral Home, 715 East Pine Log Road, Aiken. Funeral services will take place on Monday, November 22, 2010 at 2:00 p.m. in the Shellhouse – Rivers chapel. Interment will follow at Southlawn Cemetery with military honors.
