AIKEN, SC -- MRS. NEVA BLACK BROTHERTON, 94, widow of Willys H.Brotherton, Sr., died Tuesday, November 30, 2010 at Pepper Hill Nursing Center. A native of Catawba County, NC, Mrs. Brotherton was one of 11 children of the late Robert Sidney and Sarah Elizabeth Drum Black. She was a homemaker and dearly loved watching her children as they participated in sports as they were growing up. She was a member of Trinity United Methodist Church and was a former choir and Joy Circle member. She also enjoyed playing bridge and was a member of several local clubs. In addition to being a great mother and grandmother, she was also a phenomenal cook with many of her recipes still incapable of being mastered. Survivors include a daughter, Joye Brotherton, Aiken, two sons; W. H. "Skipper" Brotherton, Jr. and his wife Carmen, Aiken and Howard G. Brotherton and his wife Shirl of Kimberton, PA, four grandchildren; Hope Hooper and her husband Jamey, Jonathan Brotherton, Kevin Brotherton and his wife Mandy and Andrew Brotherton and his wife Katie and five greatgrandchildren; Brandon Oerman, Ashley Oerman, Jay Hooper, Alexis Hooper and Emma Brotherton. She is also survived by a number of cousins, nieces and nephews. In addition to her husband, parents, brothers and sisters, she was preceded in death by a granddaughter, Ashley Hope Brotherton. Funeral services will be held Friday at Noon at Trinity United Methodist Church with the Rev. Dr. Rodney K. Powell officiating. Interment will follow in Aiken Memorial Gardens. Pallbearers will include Jonathan Brotherton, Kevin Brotherton, Jamey Hooper, Ted Gantt, Jay Pittman, and Ken Clarke. Honorary Pallbearers will be members of the Joy Circle of Trinity United Methodist Church. The family will receive friends from 6 to 8 PM Thursday at Shellhouse - Rivers Funeral Home. The family would especially like to thank the staff of Shadow Oaks Assisted Living, and Pepper Hill Nursing Center and special caregivers, Florine Moody and Delores Ware for their exceptional care and kindness.
