AIKEN, SC -- MILLEDGE MURPHEY CLYATT, 61, beloved husband of Claye Dyches Clyatt, died Friday, December 10, 2010 at his residence. Born in Augusta, GA, Milledge was a son of the late Clarence Ramsey and Martha Murphey Clyatt. He grew up in Greenville, SC, and returned to Augusta, GA in 1968 after from Greenville High School. While attending USC-Aiken "Harvard on the Hill" from 1968 to 1971 he met his wife of 36 years. He earned his A.S. in Commercial Science, graduating with honors, and completed his B.S. at Lander College in 1973. He was member of the U.S. Army Reserve, 307th Chemical Co. in Greenville, SC from 1968 - 1974. Milledge worked for his father at Maxwell Furniture Company in Greenville, SC and Augusta, GA as assistant manager. He was promoted to store manager in 1973 and opened a new Maxwell's in Lancaster, SC. In 1976 Milledge returned to Aiken and went to work for his father-in-law, B. T. Dyches, Jr., as manager of Dyches Building Supply. Most recently, he worked for the last 15 years at ABC Supply in Augusta. His ABC associates were part of his extended family and they were an integral part of his accomplishments as their top outside salesman, being awarded "Top Window Salesman" for the region every year. Milledge was Past President of Aiken Sertoma, and former Sertoman of the year. He was a former Distinguished Governor and life member of Sertoma International, co-chair for Camp Sertoma, worked for and chaired several committees for Palmetto Amateur, he was Past-President of USCA Pacer Club, served on the USCA Partnership Board, Board of Visitors at Lander College, past Board Chairman of Hitchcock Rehabilitation, Past-President of Aiken Driving Club and served on the Boards of Directors of Camp Sertoma, Helping Hands and Aiken SPCA, and for over 20 years, the Aiken Steeplechase Association. Milledge was a member of Millbrook Baptist Church and served as an usher. He was a member of American Legion Post 26. Survivors include his beloved wife Claye, a daughter, Martha Clyatt Messick and her husband Charles Edward, Jr., of Aiken, SC, two grandchildren; Milledge Cooper Messick and Clayton Edward Messick, and his brother, Clarence Ramsey Clyatt, Jr., of Augusta, GA. In addition to his parents, he was preceded in death by his son, Milledge Murphey Clyatt, Jr. A memorial service will be held Tuesday at 11:00 AM at Millbrook Baptist Church with The Rev. Dr. Eddie Leopard officiating. Private interment will take place in Bethany Cemetery. The family will receive friends from 5:30 to 7:30 PM Monday at Shellhouse - Rivers Funeral Home. In lieu of flowers, memorial contributions may be directed to Millbrook Baptist Church, 223 South Aiken Blvd., Aiken, SC 29803.
