Aiken, SC- Joe B. Babb, 83, died Dec. 16 at home. He was born in Sebrell, VA to the late James A. and Lula Vick Babb. He was educated in the public schools of VA. He was a US Army Veteran of WWII, US Merchant Marine, US Marine Veteran of the Korean War, where he received the WWII Victory Ribbon, WWII Good Conduct Ribbon, Presidential Service Medal, and Community Service Ribbon Marine Corp League. He was an Escort to General Eisenhower and Sir Winston Churchill during a victory parade at the end of WWII. He was former manager of Men's clothing store in Suffolk, VA from 1948 to 1960. The Babb's moved to Aiken in 1962, a City they loved. After moving to Aiken, he became co-owner of Eulalie Salley & Company Insurance & Real Estate from 1970 to 1995. He was former owner of Joe B. Babb & Company Insurance & Real Estate from 1970 to 1995. He was the City of Aiken Insurance & Claims agent for forty five years, Past President of Aiken Independent Insurance Agents Assoc., Past President of Aiken Real Estate Board, Past Director of Aiken Chamber of Commerce, Past Board Director of Mental Health Assoc. in Aiken County, Chairman Aiken County Tax Review Board from 1965 to 1985, Chairman of US Selective Service Draft Board from 1970 to 1990, Aiken "Man of the Year" 1999, member of Aiken Rotary Club, member of the Down Town Aiken Coffee Club, member of James L. Hammons Marine Corp League, former Mayor of Chesterfield Street, member of Aiken First Baptist Church. Mr. Babb's hobbies included hunting, fishing and painting.
Survivors include his loving wife Louise Head Babb, a daughter Joanne (John) Foley, Bradenton, FL, a son Dr Alan Mark (Kelly) Babb, Montgomery, AL, three grandchildren; Ashton Babb, David Babb, and Charlie Babb.
Funeral services will be held 11 AM Tuesday, December 21, at Aiken First Baptist Church, with the Rev. Dr. Fred Andrea, III officiating. Interment will follow at Millbrook Baptist Church Cemetery with Military Honors.
